Founded in Istanbul in 2001 around the idea of “a magazine that thinks about cinema,” Altyazı Sinema Dergisi (Altyazı Cinema Magazine) is Turkey’s longest-running independent cinema magazine, and has for over 20 years sustained its work in the field of cinema through digital publishing, screening programmes, and seminars given by trainers from various fields of expertise. Founded in March 2019 by the magazine’s editorial board members, Altyazı Sinema Derneği (Altyazı Cinema Association) works to contribute to the development of a democratic, pluralist, and liberatory discourse in cinema specifically and in culture and the arts more broadly; to increase the visibility of independent cinema actors; and, through Altyazı Fasikül, which focuses on issues such as censorship, freedom of expression, and gender equality in the film industry, to ensure that readers have access to reliable, high-quality information and criticism.
By supporting communication and solidarity within the industry, Altyazı Sinema Derneği produces written and video content to create a space of expression for at-risk/disadvantaged film actors (independent filmmakers, distributors, cinema operators, festivals, university clubs, etc.), and reports on the rights violations they face. In addition to defending the right to give and receive information, the association takes part in various forms of solidarity with these groups’ organising processes, and provides them with a space to construct their own voice and reach a wider audience.
