The capacity development programme of Support to Rights is an integral part of the grant support. Its aim is the same as that of financial support: to help small and medium-sized organisations working in the field of human rights to not only survive, but grow and become stronger. To this end, we build a long-term, equitable relationship based on mutual learning with each organisation.
We do not see capacity development as an outside expert “filling in the gaps” of an organisation. Every organisation has its own context, priorities, and strengths; we design this process by placing that uniqueness at its centre. Organisations identify their own needs themselves; we then bring in the tools, people, and support that respond to those needs.
The principle of equality lies at the heart of this approach. We take care to ensure that our position as a grant-maker does not turn into a hierarchical relationship. We define every relationship between field officers, experts, and organisations as one of fellow travellers on the same path.
