Önce Çocuklar Derneği (Children First Association) was founded in Diyarbakır in 2017, within the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, with the aim of carrying out work on children’s psychosocial, cultural-artistic development and linguistic, cognitive, and physical development, and of supporting individuals and organisations working in this field. Within this scope, it has, over this period, carried out its activities within the borders of Diyarbakır province.
The association’s founding purpose is the protection of children’s fundamental rights and, in this context, the support of children. Alongside children’s right to life, right to health, and right to protection from physical, psychological, and sexual exploitation, it also focuses on mother-tongue and cultural rights. The association bases all its activities on a rights- and equality-based approach. It approaches every piece of work it carries out through the lens of children’s fundamental rights, access to these rights, equal opportunity, and rights violations. Following its work on cultural rights and mother-tongue rights, over the last two years it has also prioritised work on monitoring these rights and identifying and reporting rights violations. It carries out its activities guided by the principle that every child has the right to be educated in their own mother tongue and to learn and keep alive their own culture and cultural values.
