Founded in 1986, the Human Rights Association is distinguished by its work documenting and reporting rights violations; struggling for a democratic and peaceful resolution of the Kurdish issue, one of the core problems underlying Turkey’s human rights and democracy troubles; working towards Turkey’s confrontation with its past; carrying out actions and events to make violations visible and raise awareness; supporting victims in their pursuit of justice; combating impunity; promoting the concept of human rights; working to build a culture and awareness of rights; and delivering human rights training. It is the most far-reaching and widespread human rights organisation working in the field of rights and freedoms in Turkey.

It is a member of the Human Rights Joint Platform (İHOP), the Refugee Rights Coordination, the International Criminal Court Turkey Coalition (UCMK) in Turkey, and, internationally, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) network.

It engages in collaboration and experience-sharing with civil society organisations around its statutory principles, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the rights and freedoms set out in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) — whose full title is the “Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms,” drafted by the Council of Europe — and its additional protocols.
