With the aim of transforming media language and the media landscape in Turkey and making information/content independent of capital and the state, the Foundation is institutionalised around a trilingual (Turkish, Kurdish, English) media outlet (bianet), grounded in the principles of public benefit, a rights-based focus, and the right to access information in one’s mother tongue in the reproduction and dissemination of knowledge. It builds its news coverage around the rights and struggles of those who are “othered” on the basis of gender identity — women, children, and gender identities — sexual orientation, and ethnic, racial, religious/sectarian, and cultural identity. It monitors violations of all rights — foremost among them freedom of expression, women’s rights, LGBTI+ rights, and children’s rights — as well as policies, legal regulations, and practices that restrict rights or seek to expand existing restrictions; and it carries out editorial production and capacity-development work aimed at practising and disseminating a form of journalism that informs the public through news coverage, builds archives, and produces reports.
