Mordem Sanat Derneği is an independent art complex in Diyarbakır, with a 160-seat convertible theatre-cinema hall, backstage area, dance studio, music classrooms, a sculpture workshop, a work office, and a foyer.
It places emphasis on interdisciplinary communication and on the importance of building productive relationships by creating joint works. Regarding it as its duty to speak up on democratic rights and to contribute to the building of social peace, Mordem Sanat holds that art is the most effective path towards realising the ideal of building a society founded on peaceful, conscious, democratic, fair, and non-egocentric teachings — a society that protects nature and does not other anyone because of their identity or orientation. It holds that ethnic and cultural differences are society’s riches. It nurtures a pluralist consciousness against social polarisation and discrimination, and champions individuals’ participation in cultural life. It carries out activities to prevent the loss of cultural rights. While seeking ways to reintroduce disappearing cultural forms to society, Mordem Sanat draws its inspiration from the past and its motivation from being contemporary and current. Through its ongoing research and current work, it takes on a leading or participating role in building productive relationships among art disciplines, artists, independent initiatives, and collectives. Through the plays we stage, our workshops, and our projects, we aim, with this awareness and without touching their essence, to keep these forms alive in different guises and to bring them back to life in society’s collective memory.
