Haklara Destek completed its second term of capacity building program in December 2024. The program, aimed to contribute to the development of human rights and participatory democracy in Turkey, offered support to 41 small-scale rights and grassroots organizations through institutional grants and capacity building support for two consecutive years. Adopting three main empowerment goals, the program endeavored to strengthen 1) organizational capacity building, 2) organizational capacity development, and 3) sustainable development of organizations of the organizations that it supported. 

 

A needs analysis conducted by the Koç University Social Impact Forum laid the foundation for identifying the type of capacity-building support and the appropriate tools required by the organizations. The needs analysis, which was also used in Haklara Destek I, was repeated twice and the development of the organizations was monitored and expert support was structured accordingly. Four online workshops and seven webinars were organized within the scope of the program. Additionally, a total of 77 one-on-one technical support sessions were carried out by 26 experts, representing 14 different fields of expertise.

The capacity building support included the following:

  1. Field officer support: Each organization was appointed a field officer. These officers monitored the development of the organizations and offered the necessary support when needed.
  2. Workshops: Based on the needs analysis, online workshops were designed for 41 organizations in four areas focusing on the common needs of the organizations.
  3. One-to-one expert support: The expert support offered endeavored to meet the specific needs of the organization’s own structure through one-to-one meetings. Each organizations met one-to-one with two different experts twice in a 48-hour program.
  4. Webinars: Throughout the two-year program, webinars were designed to support rights-based activities designed in line with the demands and needs of the organizations. 

Ten areas covered by the needs analysis are listed below:

  1. Planning and running advocacy and lobbying activities
  2. Adopting a rights-based approach
  3. Financial management
  4. Ensuring financial sustainability
  5. Project design and implementation
  6. Visibility of the organization and reaching target audiences
  7. Collaboration with civil society organizations, local administrations, public institutions, etc.
  8. Preparing the strategic plan of the organizations
  9. Planning and managing human resources and organizational management
  10. Measuring and managing the impact of the organization
