Women's Time Association

Women's Time Association was established in Istanbul in July 2020 to contribute to the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and to the empowerment of women in all areas of society. Since the first year of our foundation, we have been working on providing legal, psychological, and social support to women who have been exposed to physical, sexual, psychological and/or economic violence so that they can cope with the effects of violence and get away from the cycle of violence. The association’s activities are grounded on three main pillars: counseling center, field studies, and advocacy. The counselling center became operational approximately one year after the establishment of the association and works to provide support to women in line with their needs or to direct them to the institutions from which they can receive support. In addition, Women’s Time Association publishes semi-annual reports on the counseling center and shares them both on the website and social media accounts of the association.

Drawing on the fact that Kurdish women are excluded from the public sphere because of official or de facto barriers to their mother tongue, experience difficulties in accessing even the most basic human rights, including healthcare, and are subjected to double discrimination based on their gender and ethnic identity due to private and public patriarchy, the association focused on providing support in Kurdish and Turkish. Although Women’s Time Association works with women who cannot access solution mechanisms, the fact that the association focuses on the Kurdish language in the field so far has enabled us to develop direct networks with women. The association recognizes this need of millions of Kurdish women living in Istanbul who want to express themselves in their mother tongue. It endeavors to create an alternative to the marginalization and, accordingly, carries out awareness-raising activities for Kurdish women on legal rights and supports they can resort to while coping with violence. In these activities, the association offers bilingual support, so that it can become a reference point for women who need support in Kurdish.
